With the religion debates that seem to creep into the Politics thread on any given day, has anyone every considered a Religion thread? It might bring additional visitors to the site and engage them in local political issues.
Of course, there would have to be guidelines...lol. For example, no telling anyone they were "going to Hell." :)

Sounds like it would be nice, but that topic would likely stir up more trouble than whats its worth, IMO.

i think if politics is fair game, so is religion. no need to be scared of it or it's consequences.

There was a piece on the news tonight talking about a church with an online confession service. You log on and confess your sins and everyone on the net can read them. Now that must be something. What do you think about that angle guys?
Kevin, you can go first! LOL;)

I agree, in that if you're going to openly discuss religion that it should be done with respect. But then again...isn't that how it's supposed to be with anything you discuss on the forum? The problem with that is, there are those who post, that don't seem to appreciate the differences in others and up insulting them.
I haven't a problem with a thread on religion.http://oldtoolsforsale.com/smiley1/pray4.gif..and if it seems to get out of hand, it should be those posting inappropriately that should be dealt withhttp://oldtoolsforsale.com/smiley14/kick4.gif, not the entire group to where the thread has to be removed or locked.

But...what if I sin outside of the forum? Does that mean I should be banned from the online discussion forum?

I wouldn't worry about that Kevin. If that were the rule, there would be no one left to post!:D :D :D

The politics threads have caused enough problems themselves so why add to the drama and bad feelings we're trying to get rid of?
If someone wants to talk religion all they have to do is create a thread. I don't think a special section is necessary.
What's everyone else's take?

Jason,
Kevin would love to watch the exchanges on a thread like that. LOL and stir the pot every now and then. I understand why it was suggested and the intentions of the person suggesting it were all good.
However, I think a thread to discuss religion would be a disaster.(just want to be clear, I think the suggestion was based in goodness by a fair thinker). It may start out alright but would go down in flames. When you speak of religion, you go to the most personal place of ones being. Everyone will feel the need to defend and support their own beliefs. Those who are agnostic or atheists will be hammered and muslims, well look how Bos gets responded to already. Very few would be able to make the quantum leap into non judgment of others values. Even less would be willing to re-evaluate their own beliefs. So in my view we would not end with greater understanding of faith on the forum, just angry people.
The political threat has gone as deep as we need to go. The divide in personalities here is what makes the site work, but that same divide could make it come apart. The topic of religion pops up often enough on it's own and that is fair. But beyond those interactions I do not see it working for MetJax.

Well, my two cents worth is simple:
I first viewed MetJax as a forum where folks with an interest and an ability to make positive changes to Jacksonville came to discuss same. Frankly, if that is ALL that is ever discussed on here, it'll get pretty damned "dry" for those those of us that aren't in a position of neither knowledge or ability to change Jacksonville at all, for good or bad.:p
I believe that there is room on every forum on the net for threads that are created for people to just shoot the shit about different things. Only those that take themselves wayyyyy to seriously will end up casting folks into Hell or demanding that so & so meet them somewhere for fisticuffs etc!:D
I quit a couple of boards in the past because they became mere "flame pits". Jax back talk was one and the TSP boards in Muncie, IN was another. A third board started by the original web master of the TSP board and called The Muncie Free Press...well those boards got so boring and no one ever posted there because it had to be so damned "PC"....myself and other quit after being members at TSP and MFP for over 9 years!
MetJax is, for the most part, a VERY "civil" board. I find one or two people that really piss me off on a regular basis so I ignore list them. Problem solved.:p
The three "taboos" have always been SEX, POLITICS AND RELIGION. Well, we violate the Hell out of the POLITICS taboo...so why should the other two be any different?:p :p :D

Me, a fair thinker? I'm a closed-minded SOB. Old and grouchy. ;)

OK...Then how do you feel about a thread on SEX??:p :p :p :D
Politics is starting to become redundant and boring. Some "spice" perhaps?:D

Don't know if ya'll have ever looked, but there are zillions of sites on-line that have "Apologetics Forums." Just do a search under APOLOGETICS and you can argue all day. I don't think Metro-Jacksonville is the place to do this though. Too many people, too close, and too many who know eachother, is a formula for disaster.
Say! I've got it!
